Independent Bookstores. Whenever I travel, I seek out any independent, used-book store I can find. Visiting these bookstores is one of the best ways to discover local histories, and to get a taste of local flavor. From Seattle to San Diego, San Francisco to Chicago, Fort Lauderdale to Providence, Martha’s Vineyard to Manhattan, I have visited probably over 50. Here in the South we have our fair share of these places of literary worship, of squeaky floors, of tranquil reading, of that warm musty scent of old bindings and worn pages. Here’s a terrific website of Southern authors, literature and resources, along with a listing of Independent Bookstores of the South.
