Memphis Film Prize to Suspend Festival for 2020 Due to COVID-19

MEMPHIS,TN — Based on the guidelines of the CDC to suspend all gatherings of 10 or more people for the next 8 weeks, we have decided to suspend the Memphis Film Prize festival for the 2020 season. With travel greatly restricted and larger gatherings prohibited till mid-May and impacts predicted through the summer, the Prize does not feel that many of our filmmakers will be able to complete and submit their films in time for the Memphis Film Prize deadline, which was scheduled for June 9th.

“It was an incredibly difficult decision to suspend Memphis Film Prize operations, but the country’s and Shelby County’s health is at stake,” said David Merrill, the Coordinator for the Memphis Film Prize. “We look forward to coming back next year stronger and, hopefully, with the coronavirus in the rear view mirror.”

Filmmakers who have already completed projects for this year are encouraged to submit their completed short films to the Indie Memphis Film Festival (indiememphis.com). Films that have already registered (by March 17, 2020) for Memphis Film Prize 2020, can play local and regional film festivals and remain eligible for Memphis Film Prize 2021.

“We have helped build an incredible independent filmmaker community in Memphis, and we’re really proud of the momentum we have seen in the creative community,” said Gregory Kallenberg, Founder of the Film Prize Foundation. “That said, this is a drastic health crisis that needs a drastic response. Suspending the Memphis Film Prize was one small thing we could do to help in the effort.”

Team Film Prize encourages everyone to do their part in preventing the spread of COVID-19, and to follow government health guidelines. These measures will ensure the health and safety of our communities.

Memphis Film Prize looks forward to bringing our filmmaking crews back to Shelby County in 2021 for a bigger showing of filmmakers and an even larger festival than ever before.
